La Moderna' is an ambitious co-production of RTVE and Mediawan with the participation of Boomerang TV and is based on the novel “Tea rooms”, by the writer of the Generation of ’27 Luisa Carnés.
Madrid, 1930. Matilde (Helena Ezquerro) is a young woman from a humble family who lives with her mother, Rosario (Miryam Gallego), and her three brothers. She arrives looking for work at the tea room ‘La Moderna’, one of the most elegant cafés in Madrid, where she meets Íñigo, her teenage sweetheart. Íñigo (Almagro San Miguel) is now a well-placed young man, the right-hand man of Don Jaime (José Luís García-Pérez), one of the most important businessmen in the city. Passion between the two young men is rekindled, but Doña Carla (Stéphanie Magnin), Don Jaime's wife and Iñigo's old girlfriend, is unwilling to allow it.
The series is based on ‘Tea Rooms’, a novel published in 1934 and one of the best-known novels by Luisa Carnés, one of the great writers of the Generation of 1927. The author was inspired by her own experiences as a waitress in a Madrid bakery. The novel is a chronicle centred on the real experiences of the women of the time.
This is ‘La Moderna
Set in Madrid in 1930, the story portrays an exciting era through the daily lives of the workers and customers of a tea room near the Puerta del Sol: new times, great social transformations and also a place for good living and glamour.
Paradoxes and contradictions can be observed in the tea room on which the story focuses. The opulence of the place and the elegance of the clientele contrasts with the reality of its employees. One of the great strengths of the new RTVE series is the timeliness of its stories, which reflect the society of the time and the feelings that will be the main driving force in its plots.
This is ‘La Moderna: a new beginning’
In the third season, ‘La Moderna’ renews its plots. The return of the Pedraza family to Spain from South America will shake up life in ‘La Moderna’. Its patriarch, Emiliano Pedraza (Miguel Hermoso), is a despotic landowner, a childhood friend of Don Fermín, who, in addition to his business in the textile industry, also owns the gallery where the tea room is located. Married to Maruja (Lola Marceli), their marriage is little short of a farce, in which Pepita (Diana Palazón), the family housekeeper, also plays a part, much to her regret.
Emiliano and Maruja have two children who are both headaches for him. Paula (Magdalena Tejado) is a rebellious and non-conformist girl whose plans do not include working for her father's companies, but prefers to be independent and open a clothing shop for poor women. In addition, Paula lives a love story with Rodrigo (Jesús Mosquera), Pepita's son, in which they will encounter all kinds of obstacles and obstacles. Ivan (Pepe Nufrio), the Pedraza's other son, is a bon vivant whom his father despises for his tendency to be inactive, his lack of initiative and his crazy ideas. Among them, that of getting too close to Mercedes (Clara Alvarado), the sister of César Morel (Miguel Ángel Muñoz). Precisely the new owner of the Madrid Cabaret will also star in his own approach to another member of the Pedraza family.
