Helena Cortesina, One of Spain’s First Women Filmmakers, Visits “La Moderna”

(November 15, 2024)

•    Actress Berta Caparrós will play this trailblazer of cinematic art.
•    And she will arrive at the tea room with two other characters: Giancarlo (Pablo Lanzillota) and Jeremías (Eloy Arenas)
•    Monday through Friday at 4:30 p.m, on La 1 and RTVE Play.

Next Wednesday, “La Moderna” will welcome a trailblazer in world of cinema: Helena Cortesina. Berta Caparrós will play this woman, whose visit coincides with the arrival of two new characters who are set to disrupt the main characters’ story lines: Pietro’s son Giancarlo and Elías’ father Jeremías, played by Pablo Lanzillota and Eloy Arenas.

Wednesday on “La Moderna”, Inés returns to Madrid accompanied by the famous film director Helena Cortesina, played by Berta Caparrós. This long-forgotten director, producer, and actress was one of our nation’s cinematic trailblazers of the time. Cortesina visits the tea room upon Inés’ invitation to direct an upcoming project produced by Agustín and the Valbuena sisters. But her good intentions clash with the reality of the time. Nevertheless, meeting Cortesina marks a turning point in Inés’ life as she begins to rethink her role in the film industry.

With the filmmaker’s visit, “La Moderna” continues its streak of incorporating relevant cultural figures of the time into its plots, as it has already done with Pablo Picasso, Federico García Lorca, Clara Campoamor, and Luisa Carnés, author of the novel “Tea Rooms” on which the series is based.

New Story Lines with Giancarlos and Elías

Plus, over the next few days, two new characters will appear on the show. On Monday, Giancarlo, played by Pablo Lanzillota, arrives in Madrid worried about his father, Pietro, who is undergoing an experimental therapy to treat his illness.

Giancarlo is a kind-hearted but somewhat stubborn young man who has ended up becoming a fugitive of Mussolini’s government due to his keen sense of justice. He is traveling through Spain to visit friends and stops by the corrala to see his father and Antonia. But what none of them could possibly imagine is that Giancarlo’s presence in our country will trigger a series of events that will change their lives forever.

The other character who will join the series over the next few days is Elías’ father, Jeremías, played by Eloy Arenas. This inexhaustible source of popular wisdom is a native of Villoslada de Cameros, and he’s not just Elías’ father: for La Moderna’s waiter, Jeremías is also a mentor and an idol.

Jeremías is summoned by his son to help him win Leonora’s heart by applying a method of seduction that has been passed down from generation to generation. But, although the method is—in principle—infallible, it’s effectiveness may well be put to the test…

Lola Marceli, Jesús Mosquera, Miguel Hermoso, Magdalena Tejado, Diana Palazón, Pepe Nufrio, and Clara Alvarado are the main protagonists of “La Moderna,” which is produced by RTVE and Boomerang TV and is currently in its third season. They are joined by a cast of familiar faces for the show’s audience, including Begoña Maestre, Carles Sanjaime, Teresa Hurtado de Ory, Berta Galo, Llorenç González, Alba Gutiérrez, Sara Rivero, and Bárbara Maestranza, among others.
